Yahweh brought Silas into the world on April 9th, 2005. He was sent to love and be loved by every person who crossed his path. He is survived by so many people who love him with all their hearts including his father, Jeffrey Paul, mother Christine Mary, elder sister, Eliana Joy, younger sister, Adyel Josie, grandmothers Janie and Linda Beth and grandfather Steven. He is joined in heaven by his grandfather David.
Silas spent most of his childhood out of doors. His family lived in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado where they had at least 1000 acres of backyard for him to explore. Otherwise he might have set the house on fire once or twice. They even read the Bible outside, as referenced by the many water-wrinkled Bibles in their home. His favorite thing to do was carry Baby Adyel around in a sling and jump on the trampoline with her. He loved playing Cowboys and Indians, collecting toy cars, horses, and cows to lose in the rocks, and hanging climbing ropes and swings high up in the trees. As Adyel grew, Silas and Eliana would pretend they were her babysitters. It’s only in hindsight that we realized we actually were her babysitters – at least when Big Mama wasn’t around. He helped to build four tee-pees and seven lean-tos. He slept in said structures, in tents, on trampolines, and nestled in the rocks, occasionally waking to find himself floating in water or covered in snow. When the family moved, he loaded two moving vans full of those logs and sticks to take to the new house.
But Silas’s favorite place growing up was in the car. He loved the twelve-hour road trip he took with his family several times a year to visit his big family in Iowa. He loved sharing a Bible with cousins at Sabbath lessons. He was always the first to start singing ‘Only Five More Miles Left to Go.’ He loved picking mulberries and eating Oopa’s haystacks in Shenandoah. He was always the last one to come in from the shed in Charles City. He loved playing with little ones, wrestling, and just holding them. Often, he hardly slept because he wanted to spend one more minute talking with grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins.
One of Silas’ greatest joys in life were the animals he took under his wing. He grew up riding Zoey around the yard. He collected cats, garter snakes, salamanders, lizards, opossums, mice, tortoises, birds, and even black widow spiders. He loved his horse, and of course his many, many dogs. He helped bring more than two hundred puppies into this world, and raised them with the greatest care and love, paying special attention to the puppies that needed extra care.
Silas was quite the athlete. He started running cross country in first grade, where he looked after every person on the team. He also gave them all a good laugh when he ran Aspen in his footie sleeper. Wrestling, though, was his passion. Once he surpassed Eliana’s partnering skills, he wrestled for Connifer, Chatfield, Castle Rock, Jefferson, Columbine, and Northeastern Plainsmen. He was an incredible teammate and an even better friend to every wrestler. He would often hug his opponents after a match, whether he had won or lost. At Nationals last year, he asked God to give him the strength for one more match after already wrestling seven matches in as many hours. His family drove in a crowded, sweaty truck to watch him place seventh and become an All-American.
Silas put his whole heart into everything he did. He loved to talk about cars, fix and ride motorcycles. He bought his first car when he was 15, and owned ten more vehicles after that, including a plow truck. He also loved to cook. Indian food, street tacos, cheesecake, and in the early years some ill-fated banana bread. But even more than cooking and eating, he loved to watch others enjoy his food.
Silas had two missions he pursued in life. First, to serve the Lord. He spent many an hour lost in his Bible or deep in prayer. He was baptised by his father in a stream in the mountains on July 9, 2016 with his family standing witness. His greatest joy and comfort was always in Yahweh. His second mission was to serve others. Whenever anyone was sick he would sit with them, feed them saltines, and bring pink drink. He spent time with every one of his grandparents, mowing, cooking, and simply talking with them. He made coffee, eggs, and green drink for Apa every morning, and by the time lunch rolled around on a school day, he was already counting down the minutes until Mama would get home so he could run out and be the first to hug her. He washed out Adyel’s diapers for three (or maybe more) years. With an injured back, he flew to Iowa, packed all of Eliana’s belongings into a trailer, and moved her to Minnesota. Silas was truly a blessing to each who was honored to know him.
Our family sincerely wants to thank you for all the ways that so many of you have helped during this time. We are blessed by all of you. The many visits, prayers, food, and kind words showed we are loved and appreciated and makes a huge difference.
Silas’ faith in Yahweh was crystal clear in the actions he took and the lives he touched. We will miss him endlessly on this earth, but our treasure is laid up in heaven, and we will join him in eternal life through the grace of Yeshua (Jesus) our Savior.
