It is with deep love and sorrow that we announce the passing of Debra Ann Alhona, born on December 26, 1951, who was called home to be with the Lord on August 5, 2025. As she took her final breath, we believe her mother was already waiting for her with a bingo dauber in hand. We like to think her beloved husband, Anthony, already had the family gathered and the guitars strumming — as was her deepest wish.
Debra was a devoted and loving mother, grandmother, auntie, sister, and friend. Debra’s heart was her family. She was a proud mama and grandma. She leaves behind her daughters, Shannon Smith (Phillip) of Watsonville, CA, Antoinette Diaz (Sergio) of South San Francisco, and bonus daughter Gina Bigelow of Alexandria, Virginia; as well as her adored grandchildren, Ricky, Jesse, Anthony, and Dominic Diaz, who were the lights of her life.
She is also survived by her brothers, Charles Gorwood (Rachel) and William Gorwood (Julie); her precious niece, her “Katie Girl,” Katie Gorwood; and her nephews Ricardo, Patrick, and Andre Gorwood. Numerous extended family members and friends will continue to carry forward her legacy of love, laughter, and strength.
Debra was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Anthony Alhona, with whom she shared a lifetime of love and memories. She longed to return to his loving arms and hear him sing once again, “From a Jack to a King.”
The family would like to extend heartfelt gratitude to Debra’s caregivers and family who lovingly supported her in the final years of her life. Howard Scheer, her “buddy,” who spent countless hours by her side and could often be seen smuggling her french fries. Jane Shaw and Denise Van Breen, who not only provided exceptional medical and personal care, but also supported her love for shopping and jigsaw puzzles. And Anthony Pebley, who stepped in early despite a heavy scholastic load while pursuing his nursing degree — his care and compassion were invaluable.
Debra’s fierce spirit and loving heart will never be forgotten. Her family finds comfort in knowing she is now reunited with those who were waiting for her, and that her legacy will live on in the love she gave so freely.
A celebration of her life will be held on Friday, August 15, 2025, at Garden Chapel, 885 El Camino Real, South San Francisco:
• Visitation at 12:00 PM
• Testimonies from 1:30 – 2:00 PM
• Funeral Service at 2:00 PM, followed by a procession to Holy Cross Cemetery (Star-of-the-Sea Military Section)
We invite all who loved Debra to join us afterward for a bite to eat and a celebration of memories — just as she wanted.
