Mary Slanec, nee Leonteos, age 95, of Chicago. Beloved wife of the late Edward “Lefty” Slanec. Devoted and loving mother of Nancy Wirth, nee Slanec, the late Barbara Slanec, and the late Edward “Eddie” Slanec. Dear grandmother “Owie” of Alexander, Stephanie, and Jason Wirth. Mary was the fourth out of six, and last living sibling of her Leonteos family, being the sister of the late Ted (the late Hazel), the late Helen (the late Carl) Morris, the late Gus (the late Helen), the late Ardis “Babe” (John) Bakosh, and the late Connie (the late Raymond “Red”) Keenan. Loving aunt, Godmother, and friend of many. Mary worked at Sears for 20 years, retiring from The Sears Tower in 1987. Devoted member of St. Haralambos Greek Orthodox Church. Mary loved her home, was fond of gardening, and enjoyed being part of the Edgebrook-Sauganash Community for over 50 years. Her greatest passion and joy was spending time with her grandchildren who so fondly referred to her as “Owie.” She will be greatly missed. The family would like to also thank the many kind and compassionate caregivers throughout the years, most recently Sanctuary Hospice. Visitation Monday, November 1st, 3PM to 8PM, Smith-Corcoran Funeral Home, 185 E Northwest Highway, Palatine. Funeral services Tuesday, November 2nd, 10AM, St. Haralambos Greek Orthodox Church, 7373 N Caldwell Ave, Niles, IL 60714. Interment private at Elmwood Cemetery.
