William E. Bruce, Sr.

William E. Bruce, Sr., 91, of Springfield, passed away on Thursday, October 7, 2021 at Springfield Memorial Hospital. He was born on July 24, 1930, in Springfield and was raised by his mother, Frances (Cronister) Baumgardner and stepfather, Taylor Thomas “T.T.” Baumgardner. He married Phyllis Mumbower on December 23, 1950 and she preceded him in death on December 7, 2014. He later married Barbara A. Risse on February 21, 2016.
Survivors include his wife, Barbara, of Springfield; one daughter, Debbie (Leo) Suhre of Commerce, GA; one son, Bill (Laurie) Bruce, Jr. of Springfield; seven grandchildren, Brian Bruce, Chris Bruce and Kadi Jones, Heather Anders, Curtis Cass, Sabrina Bruce and Michael Metzroth; two step-grandchildren, Justin and Amy Suhre; and numerous great-grandchildren.
He is also preceded in death by his parents and one son, Darrell Bruce.
William was a lifelong resident of Springfield. He belonged to Asbury Methodist Church. He was a former member of Sangamon Valley Woodcarvers and a life member of the DAV and VFW. William was a United States Marine Corps veteran, serving during the Korean War and was a Purple Heart recipiant. He worked at Sangamo Electric Company, retiring after 30 years of service.
Family and friends may gather at Staab Funeral Home-Springfield by 11:00 am, Thursday, October 14, 2021 and we will proceed to Oak Ridge Cemetery where graveside services will be held at 11:45 am with Reverend Bill Burton officiating. Military honors will be conducted by the United States Marine Corps.
Memorial contributions may be made to Asbury Methodist Church.
