Walter Read Swain

London, England

Walter Read Swain, 68, passed away December 29, 2024, at Croydon University Hospital in England from complications due to early onset Alzheimer’s disease. A memorial will be held at a later date.

Walt was born in Des Moines, Iowa on February 16, 1956, the son of David and Ruth Swain. The family moved to the Cedar Rapids area in 1968 where Walt attended Jefferson High School and later earned an Associate of Applied Science degree in Mechanical Engineering at Kirkwood College. As a teenager, Walt worked with his dad in the electrical trade and eventually went on to have a career as a proud member of the Iron Workers Local 89.

Walt became a devoted Christian and attended the River of Life Church in Cedar Rapids. It was there that he met his wife Amanda as she traveled from the United Kingdom to attend a seminar at the church. Walt and Amanda married in January of 2004, and Walt moved to England at that time. Walt was savvy in the construction trade and remodeled flats after he moved to the London area.

Walt was a hard worker who cherished his family and friends and had a great sense of humor. He enjoyed home projects, yard work, golf, listening to music, reading the bible, and watching Formula I racing with his wife and good friend Matthew.

Walter is survived by his wife, Amanda of Lymington, England, his mother Ruth Swain of Cedar

Rapids; his children Joel (Shawna) Swain of Bondurant, Iowa and Kim (John) Armstrong of Palo, Iowa; his

grandchildren Isla Swain and Henry Armstrong; his brother Michael Swain (Debbie) of Cedar Rapids; and

sisters Karen (Lynn) Kruse of Cedar Rapids, Leighann (Tim Henderson) of Kearny, Arizona and Carla

(Tommy) Barrow of Marion, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by his father and grandparents.

The family extends heartfelt gratitude for the wonderful care he received at Amberley Lodge in

Purley, UK; and to Matthew Anderson of Croydon, UK, an honorary member of the family who provided

an unwavering friendship and endless support during his illness.

The family asks that any memorial donations be directed to the Alzheimer’s Foundation of

America at 322 8th Avenue 16th Floor, New York, NY 10001 or Cure Alzheimer’s Fund at 34 Washington
