Walter Edward “Walt” Horning, 83, of Washington County, Iowa, passed away peacefully on Sunday, June 22, 2025, due to complications related to lymphoma and Alzheimer’s Disease.

Walt was born on April 14, 1942, in Washington, Iowa, the son of Walter and Mildred (Oldfield) Horning, and remained a lifelong resident of Washington County. He graduated from Washington High School and shortly thereafter began working for Thermogas and Skelgas. It wasn’t long before he turned to agriculture, devoting his life to farming hogs, corn, soybeans, and cattle. Walt continued to contribute his many skills to construction as well into his late 60s.

Walt served as a Cedar Township County trustee for many years. He was always ready to lend a hand to friends and neighbors.

Walt’s true joys came from the simple things in life. He liked trips to the feed store, ‘coffee’ with friends and the outdoors hunting and fishing. Above all, he treasured the time he spent with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren—small moments teaching them things or just being near them made him smile.

He is survived by his five children: Neal (Jennifer) Horning, Jarrod (Carol) Horning, Jorjean Horning, Toni Guy, and Wendi (Kevin) Nolan; nine grandchildren: JeNeal Horning, JaLea Horning, Jared (Megan) Holmes, Jordan (Nick) Rogers, Jayse (Delaney) Horning, Mitch (Courtney) McKusick, Amanda McKusick, Ella Nolan and Grant Nolan; and thirteen great-grandchildren. He is also survived by sisters, Carol (Lyle) Hesseltine and Dorothy Bagnall.

Walt was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Mildred (Oldfield) Horning; a sister, Joan Horning; a brother, William (Bill) Horning; and a son-in-law, Phil Guy.

The family will be present to receive friends at the Jones & Eden Funeral Home from 4:00 until 7:00 p.m. on Monday, June 30, 2025. An interment will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please make memorial donations to the Compassus Hospice or The Washington County Fair. Online condolences may be sent to Walt’s family at www.jonesfh.com.
