Virgil Albert Hanson, 71, of Bertram, Iowa, passed away Dec. 21 while fighting his short battle with head and neck cancer. He passed with his loving wife of 43 years, Holly Hanson, at his side.

Virgil was preceded in death by his parents, Louis “Bill” Hanson and Virginia “Nanny” Hanson.

He is survived by his wife, Holly Hanson; his sister, Etta Heaton (Randy); his three daughters, Gretta Faith, 43, Melody Star, 41, Elizabeth Dawn, 35; his six grandchildren, Aiden, Lucy, Mason, Emery, Mylan and Zoe. Virgil had five nieces and three nephews.

Virgil was a family man who would easily shed a tear when his family entered a room. Virgil grew up in Bertram, Iowa, and would later raise his family there as well. He graduated from Washington High School and earned a certification degree as an engineering aid from Kirkwood Community College. Virgil was a talented musician, playing lead guitar and vocalist for over 55 years in Iowa. He shared his talents with bands such as The Stone Garden, Hostage, Moonshine, Storm Watch and On the Virg with Billy P. Virgil enjoyed bird watching, shooting pool and music, but more than anything he loved life and his family. He had the voice of an Angel, usually the loudest in the room.

We will pass on his repetitive stories he shared and his wise Virg-isms, as he will be missed dearly from all who knew and loved him. Stay tuned for his celebration of life come the new year.
