Terrence J. “Terry” O’Brien
The Honorable Terrence J. “Terry” O’Brien, 64, retired President and Commissioner of M.W.R.D.G.C, lifelong Chicago resident, passed away peacefully in his home on February 28, 2021, surrounded by his family. Loving husband to Julie (nee James) for 33 years. Proud father of Kevin, Therese and Patrick. Beloved brother of Cathy (Bill) Eggebrecht, Greg O’Brien, John (Jean) O’Brien, Bill (the late Mary Carol) O’Brien. Cherished son of the late William and Mary Therese. Fond brother-in-law, an awesome uncle to many nieces and nephews, as well as dear friend of many.
Terry spent all his life living in Chicago. He attended grade school at St. Hilary’s, Loyola Academy High School and John Carroll University in Ohio. He moved to Edgebrook with his wife Julie in 1989 raising three children and where St. Mary of the Woods Parish community became a significant part of his life. Throughout his lifetime, Terry formed hundreds of lasting friendships and relationships. Terry retired in 2012 from the M.W.R.D.G.C after 24 years. His professional accomplishments were countless. His greatest achievement was focusing on the completion of the Deep Tunnel. A well-known fact is that Terry never missed a Board of Commissioners meeting in his 24 years of service. Upon his retirement, the Northside Treatment plant was renamed Terrence J O’Brien Water Reclamation Plant honoring his years of hard work and dedication to the people of Cook County, the employees of the District and always doing what was best for the District.
Visitation Thursday, March 4, 2021 from 3:00pm – 8:00pm at Smith-Corcoran Funeral Home, 6150 N. Cicero Ave, Chicago IL 60646. Due to covid-19 restrictions only 50 guests will be allowed in the funeral home at one time and masks must be worn. The Mass of the Resurrection will be private as well as Interment at All Saints Cemetery. More info 773-736-3833
