Sister Mary K. Doughan, RSM, 97, died on Nov. 19, 2022, at Hallmar in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, after a brief illness. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 29, 2022, at the Sacred Heart Chapel, by Rev. Greg Bahl. Burial will be at the Mount Calvary Cemetery in Cedar Rapids. Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 28, 2022, at the Sacred Heart Chapel, with a wake service at 6:30 p.m. Arrangements are with Teahen Funeral Home.

Sister Mary K. was born on March 2, 1925, in Britt, Iowa, the daughter of Elmer and Marie (Loebig) Doughan. She attended elementary school at Boone No. 5 in Boone, Iowa, and graduated from Corwith Highschool, in Corwith, Iowa, in 1942. She entered the Cedar Rapids Regional Community of the Sisters of Mercy of the Americas in 1945.

Sister Mary K. graduated from Viterbo University with a B.A. in Education from Lacrosse, Wis., in 1960. She completed her M.A. in Education – Guidance and Counseling from the University of Iowa, Iowa City, Iowa, in 1966.

Sister Mary K.’s first ministry was teaching. From 1942 to 1962, she taught in the following schools: St. Benedict’s, Decorah, Iowa; Immaculate Conception, and Cedar Rapids, Iowa; 1958 to 1962 was a teacher at Sacred Heart School, Waterloo, Iowa. From 1962 to 1972 she was a Counselor and Instructor at Regis High School in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. From 1972 to 1984 she worked in Campus Ministry/Director of Counseling at Mount Mercy College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. From 1985 to 1991 she was a pastoral associate at St. Boniface Church in Garner, Iowa. She was a guidance counselor at Newman High School in Mason City, Iowa, from 1991 to 1994. In 1994 she began as a pastoral associate at St. John Parish in Clarion, Iowa. She stayed in that role until 2004, and worked in the parish as a volunteer until 2007.

Upon her retirement in 2007, Sister Mary K. volunteered as a volunteer teacher for RCIA, at Mount Mercy University and ESL teacher at Catherine McAuley Center. Sister Mary K. was a vowed member of the Sisters of Mercy for 77 years.

In addition to the Sisters of Mercy, Sister Mary K. is survived by her sister Audrey Walmsley, Webster City, Iowa; and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Elmer and Marie; sister, Adele; and brother-in-law, Jim Walmsley.
