Shirley Ann Waldrep, 89, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, died Thursday, Oct. 26, 2023. A service will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 4, 2023, at Grace Episcopal Church in Cedar Rapids. Burial will take place in the Grace Episcopal Church Columbarium in Cedar Rapids. Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Cedar Rapids assisted the family.
Shirley was born Dec. 4, 1933, in Delhi, Iowa, the daughter of Charles and Juanita (Bartlett) Vesey. She graduated from Delhi High School, Class of 1951. Shirley served in the United States Army from 1955-56, where she was the first picked on the All-Star basketball team (they won the championship that year), as well as the first picked for the All-Star softball team. Shirley served at the Fitsimmons Army Hospital in Denver, Colo., where she met and married John Waldrep. She was a member of Grace Episcopal Church, where she also served as a deaconess. Shirley married Kenneth J. Day on July 29, 1997. Shirley will be remembered as kind, full of energy, and full of sass.
Shirley is survived by many who loved her dearly, her children, Kimberly LeClere of Bernard, Iowa, Karen (Jeff) Miller of Marion, Iowa, Tom Waldrep (Wendy Holmes) and Kelly Waldrep, all of Cedar Rapids; eight grandchildren, Jason Henderson, Jeff Henderson, Charles Waldrep, Jessica Waldrep, Stormy Waldrep, Cameron Waldrep, Heather Jess, and Jared Jess; and 10 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Kenneth; nine siblings; and son-in-law, Leo LeClere.
