Robert “Rob” James Rohwedder, 72, of Marion, Iowa, passed away at home surrounded by family after a courageous battle with cancer on Thursday, June 5, 2025. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, June 13, 2025, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 520 Wilson Avenue SW, Cedar Rapids, Iowa, with a visitation one hour prior. Inurnment: Linwood Cemetery Mausoleum, Cedar Rapids, at a later date.
Rob was born on December 15, 1952, in Monticello, Iowa, to Robert G. and Imogene (Duncan) Rohwedder. He graduated from Midland Community School in Wyoming, Iowa, in 1971. Rob served honorably in the United States Army, stationed in Germany during the Vietnam era. He married Shelly Van Meter on August 13, 2010. Rob was a member of American Legion Post 259. Over the years, he worked in construction, truck delivery, retail for Wal-Mart, and retired from his warehouse position at Mediacom in 2018.
He enjoyed canoeing and floating the Wapsipinicon River from Jungletown to Oxford Junction. Rob played golf and was a standout athlete in high school. In 1999, he earned bronze medals in both point sparring and forms at the AAU Taekwondo Championship. A loyal sports fan, Rob cheered on the Iowa Hawkeyes, Chicago Bears, and Chicago Cubs. Survivors include his wife, Shelly Rohwedder of Marion; children, Matthew (Jessica) Rohwedder of Anamosa, Iowa, Michael (Erin) Thorson of Marion, and Crystal (Caleb) Lenon; and grandchildren, Terry, William, Bryce, Tyler, Owen, Livia, and London.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Imogene Rohwedder; sisters, Diane Ortgies and Judy Bahnsen; brother, Jerry Ortgies; and his dogs, Bob and Tom.
