Robert “Bob” William Campbell
Cedar Rapids
Robert “Bob” William Campbell died comfortably at home on Tuesday, July 11, 2023, at age 82.
Bob was born on April 15, 1941, in Detroit, and grew up in Grand Rapids, Mich. He attended the College of William & Mary in Williamsburg, Va., and graduated from Grand Valley State University in Michigan, acting as president of his local inter-fraternity and sorority council. Bob served in the U.S. Navy from 1961-1965, including a deployment as a combat medic in Vietnam. He later joined the Air Force Reserve in the medical evacuation wing and served his community as Commander of his American Legion post in St. Louis Park, Minn. During his invigorating term, it received a special award as most improved post in the region. As a junior high school teacher and coach in the Twin Cities, his teams won several titles in soccer and basketball.
With the success of the boutique list marketing company he founded, Bob generously supported many organizations in the Cedar Rapids area, including the Museum of Art, TCR, Camp Wapsi and local schools. Bob was passionate about tennis, and wished that he had been able to play later in life. He was an inveterate reader and gardener who enjoyed showing off his ornamental grasses. His dogs were a constant joy in his life. As ornery as Bob could be, his quick wit and endless humor was evident every day, giving his family a lifetime of stories and memories. His resiliency was legendary, overcoming everything from a major stroke to a broken neck.
Bob was preceded in death by his mother, Elizabeth; his twin brother, Richard; brother, Tom; and sister, Kathy.
He is survived by his wife, Mary; son, Jerry; daughter, Elizabeth (Eric) Reehl; grandchildren, Molly and Sam; and his sister, Elizabeth (Larry) LaMange.
Bob donated his body to the University of Iowa, and there will be a private burial at the family plot in Grand Rapids at a later date. Memorial donations can be made to Hospice of Mercy, whose constant care and kindness supported Bob and his family in the last months.
Teahen Funeral Home is caring for Bob and his family.
