Robert A. Madrick, 91, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Tuesday, Aug. 16, 2022, at his home. In agreement with his wishes, cremation has taken place. A Funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Sept. 9, at St. Pius X Catholic Church, located at 4901 Council St. NE, in Cedar Rapids, where the family will greet friends for one hour prior to the Mass. Inurnment will follow at Mount Calvary Cemetery in Cedar Rapids. Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service of Marion is assisting the family.

Robert was born on Jan. 3, 1931, in Waukegan, Ill., the son of Anton and Ann (Perko) Madrick. He was a 1949 graduate of Grays Lake High School and went on to serve in the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict, until he was honorably discharged. His passion for competing on the basketball court landed him at Valparaiso University with a basketball scholarship. On June 19, 1961, Robert was united in marriage to Mary Susan “Sue” Brickley in Decorah, Iowa. He worked for Radio Communications Company in Cedar Rapids for 36 years until he retired. Robert was a role model for many and rock for all. He enjoyed sharing his love for fishing, baking bread and basket making with his family and friends. His faith guided him through many challenges while helping him focused on the important things in life. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.

Robert is survived and lovingly remembered by his children, Mary Diane (Scott) Grant of Crystal Lake, Ill., Robert (Lori) Madrick of Anamosa, Iowa, John (Jennifer) Madrick of Fort Collins, Colo., and Beth (Marc) Valenta of Cedar Rapids; grandchildren, Joshua (Betsy) Grant, Nicole (Tyler) Brashier and Conor Grant, Andrew Madrick, Benjamin Madrick, Dugan Madrick and Reilly Madrick, Samantha Valenta and Anna Valenta; stepgrandsons, Matt Heffernan and Luke Heffernan; four great-grandchildren, Izzy and Kenzeth Heffernan and Braxton and Kendrick Heffernan; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Anton and Ann Madrick; wife, Sue Madrick; and sister, Laurie Schueneman.

Memorials in Robert’s memory may be directed to Hospice of Mercy or St. Pius X Catholic Church in Cedar Rapids.
