James R McGee

A Carson City resident since 1968, James R. McGee passed away at home on March17, 2022 after a brief illness surrounded by family at the age of 90.

Jim was born in Phenix, Alabama on August 29, 1931, to Walker and Mary McGee. At a young age his family moved to Starke, Florida where he attended elementary/high school. He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1948-1961 and following his discharge from the military he relocated to Reno, NV where he met and married his wife, Nancy. He began his career with the State of Nevada Department of Transportation in 1965 and moved to Carson City in 1968, retiring after 26 years of service in 1991.

In 1992 he decided to pursue a second career in income tax and went to work for Triple Check tax service. After several years with Triple Check, he established his own business as a tax preparer. He also volunteered at the Carson City senior citizens center in the transportation department and worked part-time serving as a maintenance department test examiner for the Department of Transportation for many years.

He enjoyed playing golf and was a member of the Highway Department golf league for over 30 years. He continued to play golf with friends and family until he suffered a severe back injury last year. He loved to read and had a large library on Nevada history. A favorite hobby of his was bottle digging and he was very proud of his large antique bottle collection.

His love of family was so important in his life he could always be found sitting in the bleachers supporting his grandchildren during baseball, softball, volleyball, and basketball games.

Jim is survived by his wife Nancy, son Gregory/Cindy McGee, daughter Jennifer Hawkins, grandchildren Lauren Hawkins, Tristan Hawkins, Jamie McGee, Logan McGee, brother Bruce/ Pat McGee, sister Mary/ Bobby Rhoden and several nieces and nephews. His surviving children from a previous marriage include Angie Hagerman, Jim McGee, Jr., Kevin McGee, and grandchildren.

The service is at Walton’s Chapel of the Valley, 1281 N. Roop Street, Carson City, NV. March 30th @ 10am. The graveside service is at Lone Mountain Cemetery, 1044 Beverly Drive, Carson City, NV. There will also be a reception at Greg and Cindy McGee’s home following the graveside service. For directions to the reception please call 775-230-6161.
