Michael “Mike” R. Boyd, 73, passed away on July 27, 2023, at Harmony House Skilled Care Facility and now is at peace. He fought a heroic battle with ALS for two years, which finally claimed him. No formal services are planned and a Celebration of Life gathering will be at a later date. Mike’s ashes will be spread in the park that he loved to walk his dogs in, a memorial bench will be there as well.

Mike was a proud veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps serving from 1969 to 1973. He was a member of Laborers Local 43, where he worked in construction until his retirement. Mike received his bachelor’s degree of fine arts in 1982 from the University of Iowa. He was an artist who loved to draw, paint and make jewelry. A war history buff enjoyed books by Stephen Ambrose and Rick Atkinson, and especially loved fishing with his sons.

He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Dee Wilson; children, Corey Wilson Boyd and Devon Wilson Boyd.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Joyce Boyd; and brother, Stephen Boyd.

Our family would sincerely like to thank all the nurses and staff at St. Luke’s Hospice who made Mike comfortable in his last days. A special shot out to our friends Trish and Chuck for visiting him as well. He will be missed by all, especially his dogs Toby and Maggie whom he loved.

Donations can be made in his honor to ALS Society of Iowa, St. Luke’s Hospice or Paralyzed Veterans Of America in Des Moines.
