Martha Sheppard Mitchell

Martha Sheppard (Brown) Mitchell, age 79, a native of Daytona Beach, FL and the daughter of Everett S. Brown and Lucile (Heist) Brown, passed away on 9 September 2021 in Williamsburg after a brief but brave bout with cancer. She trusted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior.

Martha was married to her first love Dean S. Mitchell for 58 years. They had three children: Deborah K. Strader and son-in-law Les E. Strader of Newport News; David Mitchell of VA, and Becky Mitchell of NC; four grandchildren: Zachary Strader of Northern VA; Jason Strader of Vista, CA; Brooke Steffen of VA; and two great-grandchildren.

Dean and Martha were longtime members of Grace Presbyterian Church in James City County and volunteers for the Faith In Action organization. For years Martha dedicated service to the Women’s Club of Williamsburg. After Dean retired from the U. S. Coast Guard, she and Dean owned the Molly Maid franchise on the Peninsula, growing it from its inception.

Martha’s laughter, radiant glow, zest for life, and elegance added beauty to all of life’s celebrations. Though acquainted with personal suffering, she made caring about the needs of others her focus to the end. Her life was a good example of how to live and die in grace.

She touched even those who didn’t know her personally. She was a loving wife, a nurturing mother, a sweet grandmother, and a friend and confidant, and she will be sorely missed by all who knew her.

In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to Hospice House and Support Care of Williamsburg at 4445 Powhattan Pkwy, Williamsburg, VA, 23188. The burial will be at the Williamsburg Memorial Memorial. A memorial service at Grace Covenant Church is being planned and will be announced on the Bucktrout Funeral Home online website: or people may phone Bucktrout for info at: 757-229-3922.
