Marcia Slager

Iowa City

Marcia Slager, 85, of Iowa City, died peacefully at home on Sept. 14, 2023.

Marcia is a native of Cedar Rapids. She met her husband, Gary Slager, on the first day as a freshman at the University of Iowa in a skills math class, a class neither wanted to take. However, that class was fortuitous because just last month, on Aug. 22, they celebrated their 64th wedding anniversary.

For 30-plus years, Marcia and Gary were partners in running and operating Slager Appliance in Iowa City. Marcia first worked helping out answering the phones and talking with customers. She then moved into the finance aspect of the business and successfully worked alongside Gary to make Slager Appliance a successful family-owned business that is still thriving today.

For many years, Marcia was an active member of St. Andrew’s church as an elder and as a bible study leader. She also served for several years on the board of adjusters, for the city of Iowa City. One of Marcia’s favorite activities she did her whole adult life was her flower garden in the backyard of her home. Family and friends who would stop over for a visit were always amazed at Marcia’s artistic display of colors from her many flowers. The other activity, which will be no surprise to anyone who knows her, is reading. Gary often says, “It’ll take a semi-truck to move all of Marcia’s books.”

Marcia was loved and cherished by her family and friends and will be missed very much.

She is survived by her husband, Gary; their four children, Tim Slager, John Slager, Janie Peto and Susan Slager; six grandchildren, four great-grandchildren; and her two brothers, Alan and John Stamy.

There will be visitation at Gay and Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service on Friday, Sept. 22, from 1 to 2:30 p.m., followed by a private burial for Marcia’s family. There will be a Celebration of Life for Marcia at the Eagles Lodge in Iowa City (225 Highway 1 West, next door to Slagers Appliance) from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. that Friday. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to your local Hospice organization. To share a condolence with her family, please visit Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service website at www.gayandciha.com.
