Lee Adams Young

Lee Adams Young, 94, of Mills River, died Sunday, May 15, 2022, at Hendersonville Health and Rehabilitation.

A native of Denver, Colorado, he was son of the late Oscar and Caral Adams Young. His father died when Lee was two years old. His mother died five years later. Lee was then adopted by friends of the family, Charles and Margaret Green, and came to live with them in Millburn, NJ.

He attended Putney School in Vermont, then Yale where he received a BS with Highest Honors, then Harvard where he earned a PhD in physics and philosophy.

He helped to build the Cambridge Electron Accelerator at Harvard in the 1950s, then worked as a nuclear physicist for AVCO-Everett Research Laboratory where he was involved in re-entry physics.

Lee and his wife Jane, whom he married in 1953 in Portsmouth, NH, lived in Lincoln, MA for nearly 50 years. In retirement they ran an antique business, enjoying their travels throughout New England, meeting other dealers, attending auctions and buying furniture.

In retirement Lee also became a freelance editor for the journals of Oxford University Press, Cambridge University Press, Johns Hopkins University Press, and others. He continued his editing career after they moved to Mills River, NC in 2009.  Lee loved music, played the flute and sang in the church choir. In his later years, the Church of the Holy Family meant a great deal to him, particularly when he was able to join its choir. He began to reread a book he had written years before: At Home with God: Here and Now.

He is survived by his loving wife of nearly 69 years, Jane Churchill Bellamy Young; three sons, Charles Young and wife Nina of Hendersonville, NC, Robert Young and wife Nadja of Concord, MA, and Andrew Young of Washington, DC; three grandchildren, Caroline Young, Spencer Young, and Hayley Young; and one great-grandchild, Oliver Solyom.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday, June 4, 2022, at The Episcopal Church of the Holy Family in Mills River.  Rev. Tracey Kelly will officiate.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the SPCA.
