Lawrence “Larry” Maloney

Lawrence “Larry” W. Maloney, 78 of Buffalo, passed away at 7:17 am, Thursday, March 9, 2023 at Regency Care. He was born May 17, 1944 on the family farm, five miles east of Ridgway, IL, the son of Edward D. and Sallie Mecum Maloney, the ninth of ten children.

He graduated from Ridgway High School in 1962, then moved to Springfield, IL to further his education. Larry worked for the State of Illinois, was drafted into the United States Army in 1966 and completed a tour of duty in Viet Nam with the 9th Infantry Division. He returned to Springfield and married Sandra Releford and she survives.

Also surviving are one son, Sean Patrick Maloney of Buffalo; two sisters, Martha Sue (Joe) Lawler of Lebanon and Carolyn (Jack) Bailey of Springfield; twenty-nine nieces and nephews and numerous great and great-great nieces and nephews.

Larry was preceded in death by his parent’s, four brothers; Paul (Rose) Maloney, William (Helen) Maloney, Timothy (Joanne) Maloney, and infant brother, John Maloney, as well as three sisters; Virginia (Jack) Heller, Patricia Maloney, and Rita (John) Soma and one niece, one nephew and a great niece.

Larry has spent most of his life in Buffalo, IL. After his retirement from the Illinois State Police, Larry found the time to “tinker” with his antique tractors, mowers, and other farm equipment, Larry served as parliamentarian for the Illinois State Counsel of Viet Nam Veterans of America. He was a member of American Legion Post 1922, VFW Post 10302, and Black Tiger Honor Guard.

He loved his family and especially loved the big family get-togethers.

Visitation: 4-6 pm, Tuesday, March 14, 2023 at Staab Funeral Home – Springfield

Funeral Service: 10:30 am, Wednesday, March 15, 2023 at Staab Funeral Home – Springfield, with Reverend Kevin Mann officiating.

Burial will follow at Camp Butler National Cemetery, where military honors will be conducted.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Animal Protective League.
