Laverne “Vern” R. Bagley, 83, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, passed away Wednesday, June 21, 2023, at St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids. Funeral service: 10:30 a.m. Monday, June 26, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids, with visitation one hour prior. Burial: Linwood Cemetery, Cedar Rapids.
Vern was born Oct. 25, 1939, in Brandon, Iowa, the son of Leland and Esther (Short) Bagley. He graduated from Brandon High School in 1957 and earned his AAS at Kirkwood Community College in 1989. On March 11, 1960, he was united in marriage to Ann Stewart at St. James Methodist Church in Cedar Rapids. Vern honorably served his country in the U.S. Army from 1957-59 and 1961-62. Vern was employed by the Cedar Rapids Fire Department for 30 years, retiring as assistant fire chief in 1996. In retirement, Vern taught at Kirkwood Community College from 1996-2002. He was a member of Sharon United Methodist Church and a lifetime member of the VFW. Vern had many friends and was a devoted friend to Tanager Place and Four Oaks. He loved golfing, fishing and volunteering for The Salvation Army.
Survivors include his wife, Ann Bagley; children, Terry (Diane) Bagley and Donald (Stephanie) Bagley; grandchildren, Cliffton, Benjamin, Hannah and Nicholas; five great-grandchildren; and brother, Richard (Betty) Bagley.
Vern was preceded in death by his parents, Leland and Esther; and siblings, Lyle Bagley and Rosalene Bilsland.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Tanager Place or Four Oaks in Vern’s honor.
