Larry Dean Henkes, 83, of Fairfax, Iowa, passed away February 15, 2025. A Visitation will be held from 1-4 PM, Sunday, February 23, 2025, at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home. Larry’s Funeral Service will be at 2 PM, Monday, February 24, 2025, at Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories. Interment will follow at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery.
Larry was born the son of Harlan and Ruby (Olson) Henkes. He was baptized at First Lutheran Church in Cedar Rapids. Larry was a member of the first graduating class from Cedar Rapids Prairie High School in 1959. Larry met Joyce Herman at DanceMor Ballroom in Swisher. They were united in marriage on August 16, 1960, at First Lutheran Church in Cedar Rapids. Larry farmed and was involved in multiple ventures including gas stations with his father. He also worked for Harnischfeger as a machinist. Larry looked forward to coffee club each morning at the Fairfax Handi-Mart. He relished time with his family, and watching his grandkids grow. In his younger years, he enjoyed traveling the country with his family. His true passion was building his legacy through farming with his son. Larry loved to operate equipment countless hours on end. Whether it was a combine, tractor, or truck, he could do it all.
Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Joyce of Fairfax; children, Randy (Erika) Henkes of Fairfax and Susan (Travis) Cook of Winthrop; grandchildren, Austin Cook of Iowa City, Ella Cook of Independence, Brody, Jax, and Elizabeth Henkes of Fairfax.
Preceding him in death were his parents, Harlan and Ruby Henkes; and parents-in-law, Ed and Mary Herman.
Memorials may be directed to the Fairfax Fire Department.
