Iowa City

Kelly Durian, 55, a lifelong resident of Iowa City, died Jan. 9, 2023, following a long fight with depression.

Kelly was born Sept. 2, 1967, in Iowa City, to Fred and Roberta “Sue” (Paul) Durian. He graduated from City High, where he was president of his 1986 class. Kelly attended The University of Iowa, where he earned his bachelor’s degree in sociology and a master’s degree in hospital administration. He was devoted to a career in the Iowa City healthcare community. He was hard working, thoughtful and very detailed in his work. He was most proud of his accomplishments as director of the Iowa City Ambulatory Surgical Center.

Kelly married Ann Kacena on July 1, 1994, in Iowa City, and together the couple raised their three daughters, Erin, Leigh and Gwyneth.

He enjoyed sports – especially Iowa Hawkeyes and the Dallas Cowboys. Kelly also was active in the community, a member of Rotary, St. Mary’s Catholic Church and a volunteer at the free medical clinic.

In addition to his immediate family, he is survived by his father, Fred Durian; sister, Denise (Mike) Gannon; nephews, Jacob, Jonathan, James Gannon and Jack; his nieces, Rachael, Maria and Sydney; sisters-in-law, Lisa (Mat) Grell and Chris Feeney (Rob Zier); and parents-in-law, Jay and Kathy Kacena.

He was preceded in death by his mother and grandparents. But above all, Kelly was a generous, devoted and loving husband, father, son, brother and uncle. His family meant everything to him and they will miss him greatly.

Honoring his wishes, cremation rites have been accorded and a family mass will be held. A Celebration of Life will be held in spring with details to be announced. Instead of flowers, his family requests that donations be made in his memory to National Alliance on Mental Illness.

Online condolences may be sent to his family at www.lensingfuneral.com.
