Karen Kae Cronbaugh, 71, rural Marengo, passed away peacefully on Sunday, Sept. 10, 2023, at the University Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City. She had lived around the Koszta area for many years.
Karen was born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, on Feb. 26, 1952, to Kenneth and Leona (Gartwaite) Ries.
Always striving to try something new, Karen attended Kirkwood Community College in the early 1970s, enrolling in truck driving instruction.
Karen was an avid horsewoman most of her life. She owned several horses over the years and rode for pleasure and in competition at various horse shows. A lover of all animals, Karen kept a collection of God’s four-legged creatures over the years. She had owned and operated her own business, Honey Creek Tack, constructing an array of horse equipment and repairing leather goods. Karen loved to cook, assemble puzzles, and hang out with her family and friends. She loved all types of music from rock and roll to country. Whatever she participated in, she did so HER way.
Karen was preceded in death by her father, Kenneth Ries, and her mother, Leona (Gartwaite) (Ries) Ginter; her stepfather, Joeseph Ginter; her older brother, Don Ries, and her older sister Patsy Rice.
She is survived by her older sister Corene (Rex) Miller; two sons, Kresten (Christina) Kopp and Steve (Tabitha) Kopp; and one daughter, Latisha (Jermey) Purk. She is also survived by her partner, Rick Settles.
She is also survived by her grandchildren: Steve Kopp, Crystal (Grant) Prochaska, Tristen Kopp, Kresten Michael Kopp, Johnathan Kopp, James Kopp, JoHannah Kopp, Calob Kopp, Jacob Kopp, Brandon Kopp, Alex Kopp, Keon Purk, Kena Purk and six great-grandchildren: Daymon Kopp, Elly Kopp, Skye Kopp, Beau Prochaska, Rosie Prochaska, and Tiberius Kopp.
There will be no funeral service. Cremains will be interred at the Koszta Cemetery. A “Celebration of Life” is planned for the near future.
