Jolane A. Berns, 83, of Marion, Iowa, passed away on Saturday, May 25, 2024, at her home in Marion, surrounded by her family. Visitation will be held from 3 to 6 p.m. on Sunday, June 2, 2024, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service of Marion. Funeral Mass will begin at 10 a.m. on Monday, June 3, 2024, at St. Matthew’s Catholic Church in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, with additional visitation one hour prior. Burial will follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Cedar Rapids.

Jolane was born on October 22, 1940, in Independence, Iowa, the daughter of Thomas and Edith (Postel) Lekin. She graduated from Jefferson High School in 1959. On November 4, 1959, Jolane was united in marriage to James J. Berns at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Marion. She worked for Rockwell Collins for 19 years. Jolane was a member of St. Matthew’s Catholic Church, where she was a member of the Faith Sharing Group and a Community Sacrament Minister. She was very patriotic and enjoyed camping, dancing, tending to her flower gardens, making afghans, and doing puzzles. Jolane will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.

Jolane is survived and lovingly remembered by her husband of 64 years, James of Marion; children, JoLeah Hurst of Marion, Janice (Helgi) Tryggvason of Grand Prairie, Texas, Jean Berns of Cedar Rapids, and Jim (Kathy) Berns of Muscatine, Iowa; 11 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and siblings, Norma Fillmore of Cedar Rapids, and Wendy (Terry) Armstrong of Central City, Iowa.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and one grandchild, Sarah Matthews.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be directed to Hospice of Mercy or a charity of the donor’s choice.
