John Leo Capps, Jr.

John Leo Capps, Jr., 89, of Flat Rock went home to be with the Lord on Friday, May 13, 2022 at the Elizabeth House following a period of declining health. A native and lifelong resident of Henderson County, he was a son of the late John Leo Capps, Sr., and Nina Osteen VanDorn. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Phyllis Capps, who died in 2018; brother, Ted Capps and granddaughter, Haley Marie Capps.
John was a veteran of the United States Army where he served in the motor pool in Germany. He owned and operated Capps Amoco and Sports Center for a number of years before moving locations and founding Capps Marine Service, which he operated for 35 years before retiring in 1997. He was of the Baptist faith and loved traveling with his wife. They had a great fondness for spending time in Hilton Head or at their lake house on Lake Summit.
He is survived by his sons; Barry Capps and his wife, Christina and Todd Capps; grandchildren, Kaitlyn Capps, Sela Capps, Cameron Capps and Nolan Capps; sister, Ann Carland and her husband, Charles of Tennessee and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
A funeral service will be held at 2pm on Saturday, May 21, 2022 in the chapel of Forest Lawn Funeral Home with Reverend Kevin Long officiating. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 1-2 pm in the chapel. Burial with military honors will follow in Forest Lawn Memorial Park.
In Lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in John’s honor may be made to Four Seasons Compassion for Life.
