Joanne Greene

Indianapolis, Ind.

Joanne Greene, 78, of Indianapolis, Ind., passed away Oct. 2, 2022, in her home and surrounded by her family holding her hands. She was born May 8, 1944, in Indianapolis, to O.C. and Mary B. Shockley. Joanne was a 1962 graduate of Rockville High School. She earned an Associates degree in business administration from Indiana State University and was employed with U.S. Steel Corporation for seven years. She took a hiatus from working outside the home to raise her two children while living in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

After moving back to Indianapolis, Joanne was employed by the American Legion National Headquarters, where she was part of the team that helped prepare for the annual Legionaire National Convention. Later, her desire to work closer to home led her to take a position with Sallie Mae as a loan consolidation specialist for six years before retiring to be with her husband and children. While bravely battling Rheumatoid Arthritis for 34 years, Joanne will always be remembered for being a cheerful and positive person who loved people and a good joke. She was an avid reader and a devout United Methodist. Joanne especially adored her granddaughters and felt fortunate to participate in their lives and weekly activities before she passed.

Joanne is survived by her loving husband of 56 years, Russell L. Greene; children, Kimberly “Kimmy” Greene (Donna Scalf) and Russ “Rusty” Greene (Michelle Greene); and granddaughters, Madison and Norah.

She was preceded in death by her beloved parents, O.C. and Mary B. Shockley; grandparents whom she spent many years with as a baby, Oscar C. Sr. and Leah Shockley; and aunt and uncle, Quinton and Barbara Shockley.

A Celebration of Life service will be held near Joanne’s birthday in May of 2023. An announcement with location and time of the service will be posted on her CaringBridge website in the coming weeks.
