Joan Lee Pantel was born Oct. 1, 1943, in Iowa City, Iowa the daughter of Clifford C. and Orpha A. (Hime) Pantel. Growing up in West Liberty, she attended school graduating from West Liberty High School in 1962. She was united in marriage to Alonzo Nelson Liddell (Lonnie) on Feb. 1, 1963, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. The couple resided in West Liberty raising their two sons, Todd and Troy. In 1988 Joan and Lonnie moved to North Liberty. Joan not only cared for her immediate family but was caregiver to a number of extended family members.
Joan was known for many things, her love of baking was not only one that brought her great joy, especially trying out new recipes, but sharing her cookies, pies and other baked goodies with family, friends, neighbors and the community. She loved all animals, tame and wild, was known to have fed Chuck the Woodchuck and Percy the Opossum, deer and many other creatures especially birds on their property. After moving to North Liberty, she and Lonnie enjoyed hosting at area campgrounds, Edgewater in Coralville, and FW Kent Park near Oxford. Here Joan made new friends that lasted her lifetime, still corresponding with many all over the United States. But most important in her life was her family, especially as the grandchildren and great-grandchildren came along.
Her family includes her son, Todd; daughter-in-law, Marty Liddell; six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren and a very dear friend, Ellie Graves.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Lonnie; her son, Troy; daughter-in-law, Kelly Liddell; and brother, Donald Pantel.
