Joan Bouslog

Marion

On July 26, 2024 in Marion, Iowa, Joan Bouslog ascended into heaven to be with the almighty Father, and the love of her life, John Bouslog. Joan Bauer was born on June 19, 1929, in Millersburg, Iowa, to parents Vernon and Mildred Bauer. Joan was preceded in death by her husband of almost 65 years, John Bouslog; youngest son, Scott Bouslog; her Mother, Mildred Bauer; her Father, Vernon Bauer; her sister, Jan Lehr; her brothers, William and Charles Bauer; a special Aunt, Marjorie Pope and Grandparents.

Joan is survived by many who loved her, including three children, Jim Bouslog (Barb Kellog), Sue Dawson (Bill), and Jeff Bouslog (Shawn); brother, Phil Bauer; 8 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; 3 stepchildren; and 4 stepgrandchildren.

After graduating from high school, Joan attended Iowa State Teachers college and received her bachelor’s degree in education. Joan met her husband, John Bouslog during their time at college. On Dec. 27, 1950, they were married.

Joan taught a few years at Monroe, but left teaching when Joan and John started a family. Later on, Joan became a substitute teacher for many years, while raising her family. Joan volunteered at the food pantry, Linn-Mar schools, the Methodist church and many civic organizations. John and Joan were active and longtime members of the Marion Methodist church. Most of all, Joan enjoyed raising her four children.

In addition, Joan was instrumental in assisting her husband in starting his own insurance agency in Marion. The Bouslog-Verhille insurance agency opened in 1963, and is still operating to this day as Bouslog insurance. The family business was passed on to their son, Jim Bouslog and now their granddaughter, Katie Luehrsmann.

Joan had many other interests, including being an avid reader, golf, bridge, many other card games and mahjong. Joan and her husband were members of the Friendship Forces International. Joan and John enjoyed traveling and experienced many wonderful trips to other countries, including Australia, New Zealand, Russia, China, Egypt, Japan and many more European countries. Costa Rica was their last trip together through Friendship Forces. In addition, they housed many international students.

After retirement, John and Joan spent many winters in Sun City, Las Vegas and The Villages in Florida.
