Janet Sue DeWoody Schulz, 86, of Marion, Iowa, died peacefully on Wednesday, March 8, 2023, at Hallmar-Mercy Medical Center in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. A visitation will be held at the Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories on Sunday, March 12, from 10 to 11 a.m., immediately followed by a memorial service at 11 a.m. Chaplain Kyle French will officiate. Jan was born Oct. 1, 1936, in Mount Vernon, Iowa. She was a woman of faith, dedicated to her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Jan married her high school sweetheart, Wallace L. DeWoody, on June 10, 1956. They celebrated 52 years of marriage before Wally’s passing in 2008. Wally and Jan were long time residents of Marion, Iowa, where they raised their six children, Julie (Karl) Rosenberg of Cedar Rapids, Tami (Dan) Drexler of Swisher, Gwendolin (Mark) Graybill of Leander, Texas, Mollie (Shane) Grosse of Denver, Iowa, Bradley (Bonnie) DeWoody of Marion and Todd (Emily) DeWoody of Indian Harbor Beach, Fla.

Jan was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. She stayed closely connected to her family as it continued to grow to include 18 grandchildren, Madelyne (Zach) Garcia, Lucy Rosenberg, Fritz Rosenberg, Karlie (Tim) Lipsius, Kasey (Trisha) Drexler, Quenten (Chastity) Offerman, James (Nicole) Offerman, Ashley (Trent Folkman) Garretson, Brooklyn (Cale) Pidima, Joshua Garretson, Chelsea Garretson, Bobbie Grosse, Bo Grosse, Kaitlyn DeWoody, Kaydence DeWoody, Cooper DeWoody, Landen Gorden and Mya DeWoody; and 12 great-grandchildren, Paisley Lipsius, Haley Ganfield, Mason Drexler, Ethan Drexler, Hunter Offerman, Drake Offerman, Jase Offerman, Avery Offerman, Kelsey Offerman, McKinley Offerman, Emerson Folkman and Amara Folkman. This list of survivors also includes Jan’s sister, Geraldine Stolba, of Marion, Iowa, and many nieces and nephews.

Jan married Walter L. Schulz on Nov. 28, 2009. Her family continued to grow as this union added three stepchildren, Roger (Carla) Schulz, Sue (Mark) Maher and Jenny (John Chaimov) Schulz; four step-grandchildren, John (Nichole) Schulz, Kate Schulz, Mark (Erica) Schulz and Jacob Maher; two step-great-grandchildren, Molly Schulz and Clare Schulz. Jan and Walt spent their 13 years of marriage residing between Marion, Iowa, and Apache Junction, Ariz.

Jan was preceded in death by her husband, Wallace DeWoody; her parents, John and Ursula Lorence; her two brothers, Jack and Everett Lorence; and infant twin grandchildren, Brandon and Brittany DeWoody.

The family would like to express their sincere and heartfelt thank-you to the staff of Mercy’s Hospice Services, as well as the staff at Hallmar-Mercy for the care and comfort they provided Jan in her final year.
