Jane “Mike” Zahn

Cedar Rapids

With profound sadness we announce the passing of Jane Zahn, Mike to most of us, our loving and devoted mother and friend to all whose lives she touched, on Feb. 1, 2023.

She leaves behind a dysfunctional family that she was very proud of. Jane was world-renowned for her semi-lack of patience, not holding back her opinion and a talent for telling it like it is. She always told you the truth, or her version of it even if it wasn’t what you wanted to hear. It was the school of hard knocks and yes, we were told many times how she had to walk for miles in a blizzard, uphill both ways, to get to school with holes in her shoes, so suck it up. With that said she was genuine to a fault, a softy at heart and yet she sugar coated nothing.

Her wide-ranging vocabulary was more than highly proficient at knowing more curse words than most people learned in a lifetime. Words of encouragement, wisdom, and sometimes comfort, kept us in line, taught us the “school of hard knocks” and gave us something to pass down to our children. Everyone always knew where you stood with her. She liked you or she didn’t, it was black or white. As her children we are still trying to figure out which one it was for us (we know she loved us).

She will be sorely missed and is survived by her sister, Dr. Winni Edwards; cousin, John Boyle; children, Ricky Zahn, Shawn Zahn and David Zahn; and grandchildren, Zack Zahn, Jordon Zahn and Bobby Zahn.

She was preceded in death by her loving husband Paul; brother, Bob; sister, Pat; and son, Shane.

All of whom loved her dearly, and will never forget her tenacity, wit, charm, grace (when pertinent), undying love and care for them.

A Celebration of Life will be held at Miguels, 175 Jacolyn Dr. NW, from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 4.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks you send a donation to Oldorf Hospice House, c/o Mercy
