James W. Schumacher

Phoenix, Ariz.

James Walter Schumacher, 79, of Phoenix, Ariz., passed away peacefully in his sleep after a long illness.

James “Jim” was born Feb. 8, 1943, in Dubuque, Iowa, to Walter George Schumacher and Kathryn L (Otting). He grew up in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and lived there for 43 years before moving to Arizona.

Jim worked many years in construction and for a time had his own company. Over his career he built a couple homes for his family. He was skilled at interior finishing work and was proud of their final home where he remodeled several rooms with new cabinets, counters and trim. Jim enjoyed going to car shows, and especially enjoyed classic cars. He even rebuilt his own, a 1955 F100 Ford truck in his favorite color blue. Jim (and Dianne) were lovers of dogs, they owned and cared for many over the years … Muffer, Tuffer, Spike, Tiffany, Boo, Pogo, Gadget and Gizmo.

Jim was preceded in death by his wife, Dianne C. Schumacher (1946-2021) whom he was married to for 49 years. He also was preceded in death by his brothers, Jack Schumacher and Joel Schumacher; brother-in-law, Don Wilson; and granddaughter, Courtney Schumacher.

He is survived by two daughters, Leah (Christopher) Hupp of Minnesota, Christina (Randy) Cason of Gilbert, Ariz.; son, Aaron (Candi) Schumacher of Chandler, Ariz.; sisters, Judy Wilson and Jeanne Schumacher (Jim); and brothers, Jan (Deb) Schumacher, Jeff (Kathy) Schumacher, Jerry Schumacher (Jane), all of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; 10 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers and because of their wonderful care of Jim, a memorial donation can be made to Hospice of the Valley, 1510 East Flower Street, Phoenix, AZ 85014. Or online at http://www.hov.org/donate.
