James Northup, 85, passed away peacefully at Belle Plaine Specialty Care on March 20, 2023.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, March 24, 2023, at the Blairstown American Legion Hall.

Friends may call from 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday, also at the Legion Hall. A private interment will be held at a later date.

James was born Jan. 18, 1938, in Sigourney to Jess and Hazel (Fry) Northup. He graduated from Sigourney High School. He was united in marriage to Joyce Herrick on Aug. 26, 1963, in Alko, Nev.

James served his country as an Airman 2nd class in the United States Air Force from 1958 to 1963. He worked most of his life at Amana Refrigeration as a quality control engineer.

He was a member of the M.J. Kirby American Legion Post #150. James loved sports and was an avid Hawkeyes, Cubs, and Bears fan. He also enjoyed playing golf, square dancing, and learning Texas Swing Dancing with Joyce. He enjoyed playing cards and competing in pool leagues as well as taking road trips across the country with Joyce to see historic towns and look at animals. Above all he loved his family and his dog Marley.

James is survived by his wife, Joyce Northup of Blairstown; his children, James Northup of Las Vegas, Nev.; Scott Northup of Victor, and Cynthia Noble of Atlanta, GA.; grandchildren, Brittany Northup of Gilbertville, Hunter Northup of Norway, Allie Northup of Virginia, Elizabeth Noble, Allison Noble, and Colin Noble, all of Georgia; great-grandchildren, Thomas Javon Robertson of Gilbertville; siblings, Raymond Northup of North English, and Jeanie Frazier of Sigourney, and his beloved dog Marley.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his granddaughter, Lindsie Marie Northup; daughter-in-law, Tammi Jo Northup; and three sisters, Martha Martin, Mary Rose Lockridge, and Della Alum.
