James Mayne Payton, 87, of Cedar Rapids, passed away on Nov. 15, 2022, at ProMedica Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation in Cedar Rapids. Visitation: 10 to
11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 28, at Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories. Memorial service: 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 28, at Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories.
James was born on Oct. 22, 1925, in Tracy, Iowa, the son of John and Mabel (Mayne) Payton. He graduated from Richland High School in 1954. While in high school, he played Trombone in the band and acted in plays. James spent most of his working years as a mail sorter for the United States Postal Service. James loved reading, fishing and hunting, including mushrooms. He volunteered at the library. James enjoyed studying genealogy and the history of Cedar Rapids. He also enjoyed playing cards and was a St. Louis Cardinals and Chicago Cubs fan.
Survivors include three children, Linda (Craig) Thorn, Janis (Steve Fish) Payton and Jim Payton, all from Cedar Rapids; two grandsons, Brian Thorn of Manchester and Mark Thorn of Marion; and five great-grandchildren.
Preceding him in death were his parents; and his two sisters, Barbara Sparks and Jean Zehr.
