James “Jim” Joseph Hoffman passed away of cancer peacefully in his home on Friday, Aug. 18, 2023, with family by his side. Services: 10 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 23, at Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories. A visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home. Burial: Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery.

Jim was born March 16, 1944, in Monticello, Iowa, to Rosetta and Maynard Hoffman. He moved to Cedar Rapids in 1953. He went to Kenwood Elementary, then to the newly opened Wright Elementary, McKinley Middle School and Washington High School. He played football and wrestled, winning second place in state. He graduated in 1962.

He worked at Wilson’s Packing, LeFebure and Cherry Burrell (now Evergreen International Paper) for 35 years before retiring.

He married Kathryn “Kathy” Simmons on Aug. 22, 1964, at Olivet Presbyterian Church in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Three daughters were born to them: Karen, Tami and Lisa. They were his pride and joy, supporting them in whatever they enjoyed doing.

He enjoyed spending time with his daughters and their families.

He loved watching the Chicago Bears, Chicago Cubs and Iowa Hawkeyes.

He is survived by his wife, Kathy; daughters, Karen (Jeff) Sperfslage, Marion, Tami (Steve) Flockhart, Cedar Rapids and Lisa (Allan Meader), Palo; brother, Paul (Cathy) Hoffman, Marion; and sister, Virginia (Ginny) Emmert, Cedar Falls. Also surviving are six grandchildren, Courtney (Derek) Siddell, Drake Sperfslage, Tyler (Kelsey) Jacobs, Hannah Sperfslage, Kilee Flockhart and Matthew Meader; one great-grandchild, Lenna (Courtney and Derek) Siddell; one great-grandchild due in October (Tyler and Kelsey); and several nephews and nieces.

Waiting for him in heaven are granddaughters, Ashley Nicole Sperfslage and Mackenzie Christine Jacobs; his parents, Maynard and Rosetta Hoffman; two sisters, Viola Fort and Fern McDermott; brother, Merlin Hoffman; nephews, Terry Emmert and Mark Hoadley; brother-in-law, William McDermott; and Barney, his four-legged friend of 18 years.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the American Cancer Society or a charity of your choice is welcome.

Special thanks to Dr. Mary Anne Nelson for her home visits and all the years she provided care for him. Special thanks to UnityPoint Hospice team of Denise, Emilee, Libby, Haley, Chris, Stephanie, Dawn, Todd, Suzanne, Randy and Jason.
