James (Jim) D. Avery, 70, of Scotch Grove, Iowa, passed away Monday, Jan. 9, 2023, at the University of Iowa Hospital following a short illness.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 16, at St. Matthew Lutheran Church, Monticello, with interment in the Hopkinton Cemetery. Pastor Dave Raemisch will officiate at the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Animal Welfare Friends, 22407 Highway 151, Monticello. Surviving are his three children, Lisa (Spike) Largent, Shawna (Nathan) Avery and Chad (Holly) Avery; grandchildren, Stephanie Kennell, Michelle Largent, Colton Rickels and Marcus Avery; and his siblings, Tom (Anne) Avery, John (Tammy) Avery and Patricia Avery.

He was preceded in death by his wife, LaQuetta Avery; his parents; and siblings, Bonnie Tapken and Ronnie Avery.

Jim was born May 26, 1952. The son of Lewis (Ace) and Betty (Richardson) Avery. Jim attended Maquoketa Valley High School. He was a hard worker and was employed by Harnischferger, Scotch Grove Nursery, and Morris & Company over the years. He retired in 2014. Jim married LaQuetta Halley Jan. 19, 2010. Jim loved his family and his dogs. He enjoyed gambling, farming, hunting, racing dogs and anything that was outdoors. He was a member of Pheasants Forever. He loved to watch Nascar, football especially the Chiefs and Hawkeyes.
