James E. “Jim” Manternach, 86, of Monticello, passed away Monday, Feb. 6, 2023, at Mercy Hospital in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, with his family by his side.

Visitation will be held from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 11, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Monticello, where a Mass of Christian Burial will commence at 11 a.m. Burial will be at Sacred Heart Cemetery. The Rev. Paul Baldwin will officiate.

Jim was born April 27, 1936, in Monticello, the son of George and Clara (Kurt) Manternach. He enlisted in the U.S. Army and was called home to help run the farm. He married Shirley Besler on Sept. 2, 1961, at St. Joseph Church in Farley, and they made their home in rural Monticello, where they farmed until semi-retiring and moving to town in 2000. He was a member of the Jones County Cattlemen, a board member of Citizens Savings Bank and a member of the Monticello Lions Club.

Jim loved spending time with his family and driving his JD 4020 in annual tractorcades. He also enjoyed joining the guys for coffee, doing puzzles and games with the grand and great-grandchildren, and going out to eat with friends every Friday night.

Survivors include his three sons, Keith (Carla) Manternach, Neil (Stacy) Manternach and Kraig (Mikki) Manternach, all of Monticello; seven grandchildren, Josh (fiancee, Maggie) Manternach, Nichole (Nick) Wilson, Marissa (Chris) Dirks, Andrea (Jacob) Lorenzen, Jenna, Riley and Karli Manternach; four great-grandchildren, Peyton, Clay and Colt Wilson and Damian Dirks; two step-grandchildren, Lanie and Landon Then; siblings, Paul Manternach of Cedar Rapids, Bernard (Anna) Manternach of Monticello, Ruth Ahart of Dows City, Mary (George) Whalen of Carson City, NV, and Joyce (Rich) Lynch of Cascade; and in-laws, Betty Manternach of Monticello, Jean (Mike) Knepper of Dyersville, Verla (Pat) Horsfield of Epworth, Norma (Jim) Butcher of Farley, Helen (Dick) Schnier of Dyersville and Theresa Gulyosh, of Dubuque.

He was preceded in death by his wife; his infant daughter, Nancy Lynn Manternach; siblings, Fr. Carl and Melvin Manternach; and in-laws, Elodie Manternach, Don (Mary) Besler, Mike Ahart and Steve Gulyosh.

Memorials are preferred to Sacred Heart Church and/or Sacred Heart School.
