Harriet June (Hegewald) Bierman, 90, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, passed away at the West Ridge Care Center on Wednesday, Sept. 13, 2023, surrounded by her loving family.

A visitation will be held at the Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories on Monday, Sept. 18, from 1 p.m. until service time at 3 p.m., with Pastor Mike Townsley officiating. A livestream of the service will be available on the Cedar Memorial Park website under Harriet’s obituary under the video tab, starting on Monday, Sept. 18, starting at 3 p.m. Interment to follow at the Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery-Mt. Moriah.

Harriet was born on June 4, 1933, in Middle Amana, Iowa. She was the daughter of the late Otto and Louise (Muesse) Hegewald. She married the love of her life, Kenneth H. Bierman. She worked at the Colony Inn, the Brick Haus and the Ronneburg for over 65 years. Along with her job, Harriet loved to volunteer at nursing homes in both Middle Amana, and also in Cedar Rapids. Harriet loved her dolls, Shirley Temple was her favorite. She loved doing puzzles, crocheting and reading the Gazette in the morning with her coffee. Harriet enjoyed watching “Jeopardy”, “Wheel of Fortune” and “Dancing with the Stars.” Harriet had a heart of gold. She had a caring compassionate nature, loving all people and animals. She wanted to help everybody, especially her children and she had a special place in her heart for her grandchildren. One of her favorite things to do was to buy things from the children selling popcorn, cookies and fruit boxes.

Those left to cherish Harriet’s memory are her children, Elaine (Bob) Sample of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Diane Jeck of Walford, Iowa, and Linda Zapata of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; her grandchildren, Jeremy (Jessica) Jeck, Jason Jeck, Jennifer Jeck, Shawn (Amanda) Zapata and Aaron (Jessica) Zapata; and her great-grandchildren, Elizabeth (Jason), Isabella, Brenden, Faith, Christian, Issiah and Kai.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth Bierman; her parents; her brother, Willard (Joanne) Hegewald; and her in-laws, Harold and Bertha Bierman.

Memorial contributions may be made in her name to Safe Haven.

The family would like to thank the entire staff at West Ridge Care Center and Mercy Medical Center and Hospice for all the love and support they showed Harriet while she was in their care.
