Harold Anthony Hammen, 97, passed away peacefully on Monday, February 3, 2025, at Briarwood Health Care Center.
Harold was born on September 2, 1927, in Harper, the son of Charles and Mamie (Peiffer) Hammen. He was a graduate of Harper High School. Harold served in the US Army during the Korean War from 1951 to 1953. He worked as an Air Compress Operator in the Army and was stationed in Ft. Riley, Ft. Benning, Ft. Belvoir, and deployed to Korea. Harold was awarded the Korean Service Medal, Bronze Star, and United Nations Service Medal.
Following his military service, Harold worked as a Machine Operator for Quaker Oats and Link-Belt/FMC.
Harold and Donna Kasparek were united in marriage on June 5, 1971, in Solon, Iowa. The couple moved to North Liberty in 2015.
Harold enjoyed collecting cars from the 50’s and 60’s. Travel was another great joy, as Harold was able to visit 49 of the 50 states. He and Donna also enjoyed traveling abroad. Harold loved dancing. He met Donna at the Armar Ballroom in Cedar Rapids. He was also a member of St. Thomas More Church.
Harold is survived by his loving wife, Donna Hammen; sister-in-law, Martha Hammen: and several nieces, nephews, and extended family.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his in-laws, Leo and Eulalia (Stahle) Kasparek, his sisters: Eleanor Hammen and Mary (Forrest) Sieren, his brothers: Leonard (Martha), Paul, Charles, Justin (Joan), Herbert (Nadine) Hammen, and brother-in-law, Donald (Rose) Kasparek.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 AM, Saturday, February 8, 2025 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Solon. Visitation will be from 10 AM to 11 AM, prior to the service. Burial with Military Honors will be at Oakland Cemetery in Solon. The service will also be live streamed at https://vimeo.com/event/4899252
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Essence of Life Hospice or the St. Thomas More Church Building Fund.
