Gerald Fredrick Schwarting was born April 21, 1942, near South Amana, the son of Vernon and Johanna (Sandersfeld) Schwarting. He attended St. John Lutheran School and graduated from Williamsburg High School. Gerald was united in marriage to Karen Fay Wardenburg on July 20, 1963. He worked at Square D in Cedar Rapids as a quality controller for 42 years. They lived in Amana for 56 years until moving to Williamsburg in 2021. Gerald was a lifelong member of St. John Lutheran Church near Homestead until they moved to Williamsburg and transferred their membership to St. Paul Lutheran Church in Williamsburg. He has been an Elder for St. John Lutheran Church and served on the Lutheran Interparish School Board. Gerald enjoyed gardening, cooking, golf, fishing, woodworking and spending time with his family. Gerald passed away on Monday, July 24, 2023, at his home in Williamsburg at the age of 81 years.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Karen of Williamsburg; a daughter, Kimberly (Eric) Zuber of South Amana; a son, Mark (Leslie) Schwarting of Middle Amana; five grandchildren, Gerrod and Johanna Zuber, Corrine, Claire and Anna Schwarting; a sister, Judy Oehl of Amana; and a brother, Robert (Kathy) Schwarting of Middle Amana.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother-in-law, Don Oehl.
Celebration of Life Service will be 10 a.m. Friday, July 28, at the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Williamsburg. Burial will be at the St. John Lutheran Cemetery near Homestead. Visitation will be Thursday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Powell Funeral Home in Williamsburg. A memorial fund has been established for Essence of Life Hospice, St. Paul Lutheran Church, or the Lutheran Interparish School. Messages and tributes may be left at www.powellfuneralhomes.com.
