George B. Maxwell passed away peacefully in his home on June 19, 2025. Per his wishes, graveside services will be held for anyone who would like to attend, at Mt. Clark in Central City at 11 am on July 5 with a Celebration of Life to follow at The American Legion Central City from noon to 3 pm. In Lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made in George’s name to American Legion Wapsi Post 421, United Church of Christ Central City; or Level Lodge Central City. Goettsch Funeral Home, Monticello, has taken George and his family into their care.

George was born in the car on the way to the hospital on June 28, 1946, to George A. Maxwell and Alice Kronenberg Maxwell, who were farmers in Walcott, Iowa. George grew up on his parents’ dairy farm where they also raised beef cattle and swine. He graduated from Davenport Central High School in 1964 where he was involved in 4-H and was a member of the Concert Choir. He attended Muscatine Junior College and State College of Iowa earning a bachelor’s degree in Secondary Education in 1968. In 1970 he received his master’s degree in Distributive Education from the University of Northern Iowa. While at UNI, he was active in student government, Mock UN, and served as a student senator.

George met Joyce Miller while attending UNI in 1968, and were later married on September 7, 1968, enjoying a total of 56 years together. George joined the National Guard Heavy Artillery Unit on October 15, 1968, and attended Non-Commissioned Officers Training School in the summer of 1969. He served for 6 years, earning the rank of Master Sergeant.

He began his career after college at R.T. French Company, working as a salesman calling on grocery stores and wholesale foods, selling spices and mustard. He was a talented salesman with a true gift for making friends and talking to everyone. He later joined NC+ as a District Seed Sales Manager, selling seed corn and soybeans. He eventually transitioned to Lynx Seed out of Marshalltown, Iowa remaining in the same role and continued with the company that bought Lynx, (later Mycogen Seeds) and after sold for NuTec, until his retirement in 2024. In his many years he earned top honors for sales and enjoyed several company trips.

George and Joyce purchased their first farm in 1972 in the Central City area. He followed his dream to farm and loved sharing this dream with his son Thomas until his retirement. He was very active in the Central City Community until his diagnosis of Multiple Myeloma Light chains in March 2016. As a community member he was on the school board for 9 years, a member of the Masonic Level Lodge, the Shriners, American Legion Post 421, Amvets, and The United Church of Christ.

He loved his family with everything he had. For many years he enjoyed trips to the lake with the extended family which then continued for many more years with the grandchildren. He enjoyed going to Hawkeye games with friends and family and when unable to attend in person he was an avid fan from home. He loved to watch his grandchildren play sports and play Yahtzee when they came to visit.

He is survived by his 3 children and their families: George C. Maxwell (Anastasia), their children, Dasha, Rina, and Veta; Thomas Maxwell (Alycia), their children Alexa, Addyson, Amber, and Liam; Morgan McCulley (Greg), their children Oscar and Vivian. Siblings: Marjorie Klein (Richard), St. Louis, Mo., Robert Maxwell (Sandy),Connersville, Ind., Mary Christenson (Brian), Fond du Lac, Wis., Edwin Maxwell (Sharon), Bettendorf, Iowa, and John Maxwell (Joan), Donohue, Iowa; and several cousins, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, George A. Maxwell and Alice Kronenberg Maxwell, his father-in-law Golden Miller, and mother-in-law Margaret Miller.

The family would like to thank the many doctors and nurses who took care of George B over the years especially since 2016 after his diagnosis. At PCI: Dr. Fusselman and his care team, the wonderful infusion nurses and staff, and Dr. Ramadugu. UIHC: Holden Cancer Center-Clinic B, Dr. Strouse and his team. All the Mercy and Jones Regional Physical Therapists. Most recently the staff at Hiawatha Care Center for rehab and skilled nursing.
