Gay Lorraine (Wingfield) Mercer, 90, of Middle Amana, passed away peacefully at Cottage Grove Place in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, on Jan. 5, 2023. Services: 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 11, at Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories by Pastor Kolleen Queener. A visitation will be held on Tuesday, Jan. 10, 2023, at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home from 4 to 7 p.m. Burial: Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. Gay was born in Lynnville, Iowa, on April 29, 1932, the daughter of Claude and Berdena (Macy) Wingfield.
She is survived by her children, Darrin Mercer and Sue Kittrell; grandchildren, Clint (Kristin) Moes; Clayton Moes; and beloved friend Peggy Hubbard.
She was preceded in death by her husband, George Mercer; her parents, Claude and Berdena (Macy) Wingfield; brothers, Keith and Claude; and two sisters, Mary Ellen and Claudette.
Over the years, Gay enjoyed teaching Sunday school, attending bible study and small groups. She was a member of Clover Ridge Method Church in Walford, Iowa. Gay and George spent much of their time bowling and golfing. Many family vacations and Saturday mornings were spent golfing. Gay spent many hours caring for her loved ones in their time of need. She helped care for her mom, husband and sister Claudette at the end of their lives. She took a lot of pride in being so active in the lives of her grandchildren. Gay drove the neighborhood kids to school for years. Six boys loaded up into Gay’s car to ride a block to school. She never missed a school concert or sports activities. Gay was selfless, loving and devoted to her family and friends. She is greatly missed.
