Floyd Mervin Totten, 94, of Cedar Rapids, born March 10, 1928, to Alfred and Lora Totten in Hartman, Colo., died March 7, 2023, at Summit Pointe, Marion. His family moved to Ottumwa, Iowa, in the early 1930s due to the “Dust Storms.” He graduated from Ottumwa High with his teachers saying that he had math abilities “rarer than hens’ teeth.” He actually skipped a grade in high school, graduating a year ahead of his classmates.

After leaving home at 18, he became a radar instructor in World War II, 1946 Kessler USAF base. He married Glenna (Pat) Humble from Bladensburg, Iowa in 1948 and graduated from MSOE college in electrical engineering in 1951.

He went to work for Collins Radio in 1955 and retired after 37 years of service. He loved gardening and feeding all the wild animals and birds that visited his backyard, especially the deer.

Survivors include two children, Charles (Linda) Totten and Robert Totten; four grandchildren, Amy (Thomas) Kortemeyer, Kim Kohl, Laurie (Jim) Rummells and Marshall Totten; five great-grandchildren, Kolbi Kohl, Ryan and Morgan Kortemeyer and Macie and Kohl Rummells; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Pat, 62 years; his daughter, Diane (Larry) Kohl; and his only sibling, Shirley (Charles) Bauer.

Floyd suffered from Alzheimer’s at the end of life with his family staying close by his side.

Visitation: 2 to 3 p.m. Sunday, March 12, at Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories. Funeral service: 3 p.m. Sunday, March 12, at Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories.
