Doris Maxine Hughes

Doris Maxine Hughes, 96, of New Philadelphia, passed away Monday, June 21, 2021 joining her husband, Floyd, who preceded her in death on April 20, 2018. She had resided at Park Village Health Care in New Philadelphia, Ohio since March 2018.

Doris was born November 26, 1924 in Bedford Township near Warsaw, Ohio to the late Everett Foster and Margaret (Ashcraft) Foster. She was born in the family home that belonged to her grandparents, Simon Ashcraft and Sadie (Dickerson) Ashcraft. She attended the one-room school house on the back of her family’s farm and sang in the high school choir.

Doris married Floyd Hughes on November 22, 1941, sharing 76 years of marriage prior to his passing. Floyd and Doris lived in Coshocton, Ohio before moving to Brightwood in 1954 and then to Baltzley Valley in New Philadelphia in 1971. She had designed and decorated her home where she enjoyed being a homemaker and collecting recipes and cooking holiday dinners for family gatherings. Doris loved being with her grandchildren and attended her great-grandchildren’s many activities. She belonged to many clubs including Eastern Star, St. Bernard Commandery Auxiliary, and was a charter member of the Palette Club and Art Guild having been a talented artist, painting many pictures which she displayed in her home and distributed to her family. Doris also served many years as a poll worker. She enjoyed camping with family at Salt Fork Lake at Cambridge, playing cards, square dancing, word search and game shows on television. She and Floyd enjoyed extensive traveling which included Europe and Hawaii. She was a longtime member of the First United Methodist Church at New Philadelphia where she was also active with the Faith Circle and Willing Workers.

She is survived by two sons, Eugene Hughes and Steven (Carolyn) Hughes both of New Philadelphia; grandchildren, Michael (Kimm) Hughes of Bluffton, South Carolina, Christine Stewart (Steve DiDonato) of New Philadelphia; great-grandchildren, Evan (Gamika) Hughes of Uhrichsville, Nicole West of Madison, Wisconsin and Brianna Stewart of New Philadelphia and one great-great grandchild, Leah Hughes and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a daughter-in-law, Patricia Hughes; grandson, Steven Hughes and a sister and brother-in-law, Lola and Lister Endsley.

A funeral service celebrating Doris’ life will be held on Friday, June 25, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory at New Philadelphia with Pastor Brandon Keck officiating. Burial will follow in Evergreen Burial Park at New Philadelphia. Visitation will take place one hour prior to the service in the funeral home.
