Dale Eugene Wells, 97, of Clarence, passed away on Jan. 17, 2023, at ProMedica Senior Care Center in Cedar Rapids. Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 21, at Chapman Funeral Home in Clarence, with Pastor Randy Kruse officiating. Visitation will be from 1:30 p.m. until service time. Burial will be in the Greene Center Cemetery in rural Morley with military honors.

Dale was born to Elmer and Nancy Louisa (Dunsmoor) Wells on Aug. 24, 1925, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He married Mary Smith on Oct. 12, 1951.

Survivors include his wife of 71 years, Mary Ann; son, David (Margarette) Wells; daughters, Debbie (Rob) Hughes, Chris Christiansen and Pamy (Jim) Craig; 12 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren.

Preceding him in death were his parents; his first wife, Dorothy; his daughter, Sue Ann; and his siblings, June Sargeant, Verda Covington, Violet Glass, Edith Sage and Merrill Wells.

When Dale was young his family moved to Prairieburg, Iowa, where they farmed. Dale quit school at an early age to help his dad with the farm and in 1942 he joined the Navy Seabees and was sent to Okinawa. After serving during World War II, he came back home where he worked at Cherry Burrell in Cedar Rapids, retiring after 30 years. He loved to farm and kept up with it most of his life. After retiring from farming, he and his wife Mary settled in Clarence, Iowa.

Known for his kind smile and strong handshake he was a loving husband, father and grandfather and will always be remembered with great fondness.
