It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of Clarence Alvin Van Englehoven. Clarence was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend. He entered into the Lord’s presence April 6, 2023.
He was the son of John and Della (Vander Wal) Van Englehoven, born on July 3, 1935, in Prairie City, Iowa. Clarence grew up on a farm, but was encouraged by a Pella Christian High School teacher to attend college. He went to Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Mich., and then to Iowa State to finish his B.S. in Engineering. While away at college he corresponded with the young lady he met one evening after church. Luella told him she was not fond of the idea of marrying a farmer. Suddenly Clarence’s goals for the future changed in order to woo Luella. Clarence and Luella raised one child, Linda, whom they cherished deeply but did not spoil depending upon whom you ask.
Clarence built a wonderful life for his family in Marion, Iowa. With a few other couples following God’s calling, Peace Christian Reformed Church was started and recently celebrated 50 years as a light in the community. Clarence enjoyed his work as an Aviation Engineer at Rockwell-Collins. It was fun for him and he often told people he liked it so much he would have worked for free. After retirement he even continued with Rockwell as a contractor inbetween travel destinations, including many beaches and glamping. Two trips to their ancestral Netherlands were highlights. For a brief time in the early ’70s the family lived in Kansas City where he was awarded two patents for King Radio Corporation. His delight in explaining all things aviation or computers to anyone that showed an interest often overshadowed the confusion for his audience, mainly Luella and Linda. After earning his private pilot’s license, his car license plate holder accurately stated, “I’d rather be flying.” Geneology research was a favorite hobby. He supported his grandchildren in many ways including vacations together, camping, fishing and attending their many activities.
Clarence was known for his quick wit and warm smile. His family and caregivers often laughed at his one-liners and commented on his wrinkle-free face still at age 87. He had a steadfast love for his wife and prayed to not pass before her. Even then he remained her protector.
Clarence is reunited in heaven with his wife of nearly 70 years, Luella; his parents, infant brother and sister. He is survived by his daughter Linda Pretet (Kevin), and three grandchildren, Matthew, Johnathan and Amanda . Special thanks to the many caregivers who supported him and Luella for the past several years.
The family finds comfort in knowing Clarence and Luella are together with their Savior. His memory will forever be cherished by those who knew him, and his legacy will live on through his family and Peace Church. Clarence was profoundly loved and will be deeply missed.
A Memorial service will be held May 6, 10:30 a.m. at Peace Church, Cedar Rapids, Iowa. In lieu of flowers, donations may be given to Peace Church, 6600 C Ave, Cedar Rapids, IA 52402.
A committal service was held April 14, at Evergreen Cemetery in Leighton, Iowa.
