Alice Joanne Roderick

Alice Joanne (née Spring) Roderick was born on December 21, 1932, in Springfield to Albert William and Hester Elaine (Summerfield) Spring. She passed away on March 10, 2023 at the Illinois Presbyterian Home in Springfield.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Robert Spring and Jack Spring; infant siblings, James and Carol; son, the Very Reverend Dr. Keith Richard Roderick; in-laws, Robert and Doris (Roderick) Pitts, Kenneth and Patricia (Roderick) Mueller, John Stevens, and Dee Spring; step grandson, Donald McKee; grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, nephews, and many dear friends.

She is survived by her son, Blake (Betsy) Roderick, of Pittsfield; daughter, Pam Roderick, of Austin, Texas; and daughter-in-law, Mary Beth (Hansen) Roderick, of Stafford, Virginia. Surviving grandchildren are Seth (Elvia) Roderick, Micah (Amy) Roderick, Dr. Noah (Cherish) Roderick, Sarah (Jack) Fitch, Joseph (Rachel) Roderick, Maj. Evan (Natasha) Roderick, Aubrey Jo (Andrew) Tyndall, Susannah Roderick; and step-grandchildren, John McKee, Jacob (Bridget) Cramsey, Josh (Olivia) Cramsey, and Rachel (Isaac) Viar. Great grandchildren include Quinn Roderick; Desmond and Mackland Roderick; Henry, Lydia, and Daphne Roderick; Llewyn Tyndall, Remington Cramsey; and Lynden and Mabel Cramsey. She is also survived by her sister, Sharyl Stevens, sister-in-law, Nada King, and several dear nephews, nieces, and cousins.

She married Donald Roderick on November 10, 1951, at Third Presbyterian Church. They later divorced. She was a 1950 graduate of Lanphier High School and coordinated class reunions for many years. She attended Joliet Junior College and completed her BA degree in 1971 at Rockford College. She received an MAA from Sangamon State University (UIS).

She began her teaching career in 1972 at Staley Elementary. In 1979, she transferred to Wanless Elementary where she taught until her retirement in 1994.

She was a member of the IEA, NEA, AAUW, King’s Daughters Organization, and Phi Delta Kappa. During WWII, her Girl Scout troop volunteered at Memorial Hospital. She would later volunteer at the hospital’s gift shop stepping down in 2008 after 20-years of service.

She was a 50-year member of the Third Presbyterian Church and was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church.

She loved to travel, play bridge, read, and most of all, she loved her children, grand- and great-grandchildren and spending time with them.

In lieu of flowers, she would appreciate donations be made to the Illinois Presbyterian Home, Shriners Hospitals for Children, or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

Visitation: 11:00 am – 12:30 pm, Saturday, March 18, 2023 at Staab Funeral Home – Springfield.

Funeral Service: 12:30 pm, Saturday, March 18, 2023 at Staab Funeral Home – Springfield. Burial will follow at Roselawn Memorial Park.
