Verena “Mutz” (Ebertz) Groeschel

Verena “Mutz” Leona (Ebertz) Groeschel, age 88, of New Holstein, passed away peacefully Tuesday, April 29, 2025, at Field of Dreams Assisted Living in Kiel where she resided since this past January.

She was born January 8, 1937, in the Town of Marshfield near St. Joe to William & Martina (Freund) Ebertz. Verena attended St. Joseph Catholic Grade School in St. Joe and graduated from New Holstein High School in 1955.

On April 14, 1956, she married Charles Groeschel at St. Joseph Catholic Church in St. Joe.

Mutz had worked as a Nurse’s Aid at Willowdale Nursing & Rehabilitation Center and the former Calumet Homestead, both located in New Holstein. In her younger years, Mutz liked to play baseball; she was a Yankees & Cardinals fan. She liked to crotchet and sew, loved to cook and can the produce grown in their garden, cross-country skiing in her later years, and listening to country music and polka music, as well as playing sheepshead with her friends and family. Most important to her, was spending time with her grandchildren.

She was a member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church in New Holstein.

Survivors include her husband, Charles; her two children, Allan Groeschel of Kiel and Kim (James) Ertel of rural Cleveland “Ada”; four grandchildren, Rebecca (Garret) Beckett, Lindsi (Ian) Byrne, Chelsea (Michael) Wawrzyniakowski, and Cody (Nikki) Ertel; four great-grandchildren, Myles Beckett, Madison Byrne, Brady & Marek Wawrzyniakowski, and the fifth great-grandchild on the way; her brother, Leander (Elizabeth) Ebertz of rural Mount Calvary; a sister-in-law, Lorraine Ebertz of Fond du Lac; nieces; nephews; other relatives; and friends.

Preceding her in death were her parents, William & Martina Ebertz; a son, James Groeschel; a grandson, Cory Groeschel; five brothers, Zeno (Grace) Ebertz, Ivo (June) Ebertz, Alex Ebertz, Norman (Virginia) Ebertz, and Vincent (Rosie) Ebertz; her father-in-law & mother-in-law, Louie & Elsie Groeschel; and a sister-in-law, Kathleen (Vernon) Freund.

A Liturgy Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:30 AM on Friday, May 9, 2025, at Holy Rosary Catholic Church, 1724 Madison Street, New Holstein, WI 53061. Rev. Alvan Amadi will officiate with Deacon Bernard Knier assisting.

Visitation: Family and friends may visit with Mutz’s family at Holy Rosary Catholic Church on Friday, May 9th from 9:00 AM until 11:15 AM.
