The Nevada State Museum’s Underground Mine Exhibit turns 75 today

This Nevada Day is a special one for the Nevada State Museum, Carson City. Though our artifacts are much older, it’s not every day that an iconic exhibit within our walls celebrates a diamond anniversary.
This Friday, the Nevada Day holiday, our beloved Underground Mine exhibit turns 75 years old. On Nevada Day, October 31, 1950, the Nevada State Museum debuted a realistic mine exhibit patterned after the famous tunnels underneath Virginia City, complete with square-set timbers and cart tracks.
Occupying most of the old Mint building’s basement space, the Underground Mine has proven to be a veritable labyrinth of fun and memories for generations of visitors. In fact, many returning patrons tell us that exploring the Mine was their favorite part of visiting the Nevada State Museum. It’s what they remember most about their visit. This is especially true of longtime visitors who sometimes come back many years later with their children or grandchildren. The Mine is just one of those experiences that evokes fond memories from people recalling their first visit to some place new and exciting.
Over the years, the Nevada State Museum, Carson City, has served as both an exciting new place for first-time visitors and a fond memory for those who come back to us. Much of this is due to fascinating exhibits like the Underground Mine, which captures our imagination and holds it like a sentimental treasure.
But neither the Underground Mine nor the Nevada State Museum, Carson City, would have the longevity of over seven decades of service if not for the many patrons who have supported our mission of preserving and promoting Nevada’s natural and cultural heritage through the years.
That’s a major reason why free admission is offered on Nevada Day observed and on Parade Day. This Friday and Saturday, October 31 and November 1, are both free to visitors. We invite you to commemorate the Underground Mine’s milestone with us this Nevada Day weekend. After 75 years of bringing visitors through our doors, the Underground Mine is a stalwart example of how endearing history and culture are to the Silver State.
Happy Nevada Day!
The Nevada State Museum is located at 600 N. Carson Street in Carson City and is open Tuesday through Sunday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
