Stephen G. Hols, 72, of Oskaloosa, Iowa, passed away at his home on Thursday, May 8, 2025. He was born on September 23, 1952, the son of Gilbert and Opal (Newell) Hols in Oskaloosa, Iowa. He attended Oskaloosa High School and graduated with the Class of 1970. On April 10, 1981, he was united in marriage to Rhonda Smith. Years later they divorced. In 1987, Steve began dating Cindy Lovell, whom he shared a life and home with until her passing in July 2014.
Early on, Stephen worked at Fareway. He later took a job at Pella Corp in 2010 and took an early retirement option after 29 years. After his retirement, he committed to spending time with his family and caring for his grandchildren, faithfully attending their programs, extracurriculars and sporting events. Stephen enjoyed genealogy and has done a lot of work for the website Findagrave.com. He also enjoyed planting flowers and had a large garden, going on road trips and was always looking for a bargain. Stephen was inquisitive his whole life and loved learning and researching.
He is survived by his children, Harmony Hols of Eddyville, Tammy (Jason) Laton of Vinton and Patrick (Libby) Lovell of Vinton; 9 grandchildren, Aniston, Evelyn, Gabe, Kait (Chris), Brayden(Taylor), Hailey (Darrell), Bryce (Taylor), Chris (Charlee) and Jachob; his siblings, Dianne (Dean) Taylor of Prairie City, David (Kim) Hols of Runnells and a step brother, John D. (Ann) Mattix of Oskaloosa.
Stephen was preceded in death by his parents, his stepfather, John Mattix, his two daughters, Deirdra and Erica Hols, his significant other, Cindy and a great granddaughter.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, May 17, 2025, at 10:30 in the Bates Funeral Chapel in Oskaloosa, Iowa, with Pastor Charlie McMillian officiating. Burial will follow services at Coal Creek Cemetery. The Bates Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements. Open visitation will be held on Friday, May 16 after 11:00 a.m. ,with Stephen’s family present from 6-8 p.m. at the Bates Funeral Chapel. Memorials may be made to the family.
