Night Off the Streets of Carson City has opened its winter season warming center for the unhoused in the community. During November, St. Teresa of Avila Catholic Church is hosting the center at 3000 N. Lompa Lane.
Doors open at 9 p.m. each night, and the shelter closes at 6:30 a.m. each morning. Those sleeping in the center are encouraged to use shuttle transportation at 119 E. Long St. The shuttle picks up guests at 8:45 pm each night and delivers them to the church.
A different church in Carson City hosts the warming center each month.
Since its inception, Night Off the Streets has evolved to offering homeless outreach services all year long, along with the winter warming center.
Night Off the Streets was founded eight years ago after four homeless people died of hypothermia while sleeping outdoors. Increased numbers of people sleeping in the warming center are expected this winter. Lack of affordable housing is one reason the numbers of unhoused people are growing in Carson City, especially among the senior population.
